6 Areas To Discover Your Civic Pride in Marshalltown
I was happy to see a picture via group text message on my phone, which was uplifting!
A few of us like-minded individuals who want to foster civic pride send messages about different ways we can take action to increase civic pride.
Something we text about:
Melisa Fonseca winning 4th ward city council → reason to celebrate
Hosting a block party for the completed renovations of Peterson Park → reason to celebrate
4th ward property clean up on August 4th → celebrate when we’re done
The picture was great to see. Michelle saw the civic pride in action and shared it. She couldn’t tell who it was though.
When I saw it, it made me smile. Seeing strangers making a positive impact in our community and your community should also make you smile.
Michelle sent a picture of a mother pushing a stroller with her daughter beside her. I believe her grandmother was a few feet behind her with a grocery sack while walking in a neighborhood.
From afar, the grocery sack looks decently full.
Picking up litter is a great way to show your civic pride. It requires little effort, and you don’t need permission. Plus, you can do it on your own time!
We’ll call this point of pride - beauty or aesthetics. We feel good about our community when it looks good!
Other ways to foster civic pride include being aware, appreciating, and cheering for the many improvements we see in Marshalltown.
There are five other areas in which we can celebrate and show our civic pride.
Effort
Progress
Ownership
Community
Legacy
We’ll post projects that fit in each category to the community and the fabulous projects happening in Marshalltown.
Do you have an example or story highlighting one of these six areas that amplifies your civic pride? Please send it to us!
We would like to include your story to help show your neighbors all the positive projects happening now.

P.S. We did find out who these great folks were. A HUGE SHOUT OUT to Megan Milhous in Marshalltown! Megan’s family was out for a walk and picking up litter. Bravo! Megan mentioned that Kim Dawson influenced her to do so, so bravo to Kim also!
